Features

You will find the evergreen huckleberry in gravelly or sandy soil in evergreen forests, open woodlands and clear cuts. Leaves are leathery with toothed edges and a strong central vein. Flowers are white to pink and bell shaped. Berries are dark blue to black, about ¼ inch in diameter, and are ripe in August through November when most other berries have passed. They are sweetest after the first frost.

What is the average size of a Huckleberry?

Grows up tp 2'-3' ft tall and 10' ft wide.

Planting

Huckleberry bushes prefer part shade with partial sun, but they adapt to anything from full sun to complete shade. Their fruit is a staple for small wildlife and birds. Huckleberries also need well-drained soil with lots of organic matter. Use these shrubs as an understory plant in a woodland area, on slopes to stabilize the soil, or in a naturalized area where you want to attract wildlife.
