Prepare the soil by tilling it to a depth of 12 inches. Eliminate any weeds, rocks, or debris. Add organic material, such as compost, to enhance fertility and drainage. Dig a hole slightly larger than the plant's root ball. The depth should equal the height of the root ball. Carefully remove the plant from its container, gently loosening the roots. Position it in the center of the hole, maintaining the same depth as it was in the container. Backfill with soil, gently compacting it around the base of the plant. After planting, thoroughly water the shrub to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets around the roots. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging, especially during the first growing season.
