Planting
Prepare the soil for planting by loosening it to a depth of 12 inches and incorporating organic matter, such as compost, for improved drainage and fertility. Black Lace elderberry should ideally be planted in early spring or late fall, during its dormant period, to establish strong roots before facing extreme weather. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball and gently place the plant at the same depth it was growing in its container. Firmly backfill the hole and water thoroughly. During the first growing season, maintain consistently moist soil without overwatering. The pH of the soil should be slightly acidic to neutral, within the range of 5.5 to 7.5 for optimal growth.
